EDO “KUMIHIMO” – Ryu Kobo

About 1400 years ago, “kumihimo” braids were introduced from China. During the samurai era, they were used in armor and helmets, and in hilt wrappers for swords. Edo(Tokyo) became a major production area.

After that, it was used for obijime of kimono and haori cord, and the technique of Kumihimo has been passed down to the present.

Braided(Kumihimo) cord is the traditional Japanese craft, a cord made by interlacing fine silk threads and cotton yarns.

“Ryu Kobo” was established in 1889. They have inherited the braid technique for more than 130 years.“Ryu Kobo” is one of the few studios that can consistently dye, design and assemble silk.
