Edo Sudare(Rattan blind) are bamboo screens constructed by knitting together strips of bamboo and reed with string.
Sudare are usually made of thin strips of wood, which are laid flat and tied together to make a curtain-like screen. By hanging sudare from the top of the window frame, you can block the heat of the sun and stop insects coming into the room while allowing a cool breeze to pass through the spaces between the wooden slats.
There are two types of Sudare, ‘tatezu,’ which are rested on the exterior surface of the house or the like, and ‘kakezu,’ which are hung from the eaves, and even though the use of drapes, curtains and blinds has become widespread, Sudare remain very popular due to their ease of use and aesthetic appeal .
Tanaka Seirenjo
Tanaka Seirenjo was founded in the early Meiji period and has maintained traditional techniques for about 130 years.
The current master,Kotaro,is the fifth-generation president.
For now,its traditional craftsmen are Kotaro and his father,Yoshihiro.
